Hi-Fi Cafe, Bay View

Milwaukee, Wisconsin — The Hi-Fi Cafe at 2640 S Kinnickinnic Ave. in Milwaukee's Bay View neighborhood. This perky neighborhood joint's MySpace motto is "Great Coffee -- Great Food -- Great Jukebox," and both the eclectic music on their vintage jukebox and their coffee seem to be very well regarded. As for the food, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that "If you're hungry, they have pizza, soups, salads and sandwiches. From 8 to 11 a.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to noon on weekends, the cafe serves breakfast. If you're picky, you can make your own."

Blue plates at the Blue Plate Cafe

During the 1950s, dinnerware manufactured by the Royal China Company of Sebring, Ohio and decorated with transfer printed scenes taken from prints by Currier & Ives was offered as promotional premiums by A&P grocery stores. Although also produced in pink, green, and brown, blue was was most popular and most-produced color. The dinnerware is now very collectable, and is seen here displayed on the wall of Memphis, Tennesee's Blue Plate Cafe.

The expression "blue-plate special," referring to a low-priced meal, was named after a different kind of blue plate featuring dividers.
